“Blockbusters! BIG Bible Stories to Stir the Soul”
A summer sermon series / June 24-August 5
As summer heats up, you can count on Hollywood to release some of their hottest films – what have become known as the summer “blockbusters.” These movies are generally the larger-than-life stories that involve big characters, incredible circumstances and unforgettable images. From a family with “super” powers to a new story from “a galaxy far far away,” these tales already have begun filling the big screen and breaking box-office records.
The Bible has its own share of “blockbuster” stories – stories that stir the soul and excite and inspire us. Though first told long ago, these stories continue to shape our faith in powerful ways. As the writer of Romans says it, “Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. The Scriptures give us patience and encouragement so that we can have hope” (Romans 15:4, New Century Version).
I’ve chosen seven different stories from the Old Testament to focus on this summer. The stories introduce us to important themes about God and the life of faith. There are a couple “sleeper” blockbusters in there, too – the ones that no one thought stood a chance against the big action stories. But that’s how God often works – reaching us in surprising, unexpected ways.
So, get your ticket to this summer’s front-row action. Invite someone to come with you. Because these are the kinds of stories that will leave you wanting a sequel!
